I was assigned to go see The Social Network for my Public Relations class. I enjoy this kind of homework. It does no harm to go sit in an overcrowded theatre for two hours and escape into the world of Mark Z.

Personally I love Mark Zuckerberg’s character in this film. But personally I don’t really have a big heart so that could go hand in hand. Throughout the film, Marky Z is displayed in a negative light. He is the meanest sort of 21^st century villain, he only cares about himself and is willing to eat everybody else up to get what he wants. He doesn’t need weapons he has brain power. BAM. But I found that the film would counter act his negative light with moments that would make you sympathize with him. In most of the litigation scenes I found it hard to dislike Mark because his lines were so witty. I was on Mark’s side throughout the whole ordeal. How can you argue with a guy that says the following to the Winklevoss twins, “If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you'd have invented Facebook.” DAMNNNNnnnnn is all that went through my brain and heart at this point.

They wanted to display Mark as a bad guy, because that’s what he is but at the same time they need you to sympathize with the protagonist right? Hence when Rashida Jones’ lawyer character says to Mark, “You’re not an asshole, you’re just trying to be one.” This gives the light hearted members of the audience hope that Mark is just acting out to protect himself and that really he’s a great guy, which he is not. But he still has my vote for president of the world.

Facebook was already popular. I don’t think releasing this movie had much to do with increasing the users of Facebook. It’s just simply a really interesting story about the subject of Facebook which is practically a part of everybody’s life in North America. CASH COW.  If this movie made anything or anyone more famous it would be the actual Mark Zuckerberg. Could the real Mark Zuckerberg please stand up! He has done countless interviews during the promotional period of this film, which even included an appearance on Oprah. This was PR for himself, because he donated a bunch of money to a charity. HELOO HE DOESN’T WANT TO LOOK LIKE A NASTY JERK.

As already stated above, the release of The Social Network increased Mark Zuckerberg’s face time with the media, as he did a number of public appearances on talk shows. I think Mark could have taken two roads in dealing with the release of the film:

A.    Did what he did: spun the negative press about him into something good by donating money to charity as well as laughing the movie off as fiction

B.     Other option: to not respond at all

Now B may not seem like the smartest of options but it makes the most sense in correlation with who Mark Zuckerberg is. The Social Network film is based on the book by Ben Mezrich, The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal. In the preface of the book you read that Mark Zuckerberg declined to be a part of his book. The book itself is based on conversations with the other people involved in the Facebook scandals as well as information was decoded through studying the court documents. So when it came time for Aaron Sorkin to take this book and make it into dialogue magic, Mark again declined to be part of it. So why is he stepping up now? If he wanted to defend his imagine in the first place than perhaps he should have given his side of the story.

While Mark chose option A, I think he did a pretty good job. He seemed light hearted and funny throughout most interviews. Now the whole Oprah debacle with starting a foundation and donating $100 million to it on the opening day of the movie (prpost.wordpress.com)……. FISHY??? YES. Clearly the audience knows he is compensating. But if his money is going to a good cause it doesn’t bug me.

I think people will walk away from this film thinking that was a very interesting movie with an UNBELIEVABLE SCORE BY TRENT REZNOR WHO DESERVES AN OSCAR.  Also when they think of Mark they will be dumb founded by how rich he is and question how he could betray a best friend like that. Then they will go home and tweet about the movie, because no one really cares about Facebook anymore.

Who has your back?

 

Within my buyer beware group, I was the student with the least amount of experience with hard drives. The only info I personally knew about hard drives was that we needed one for CreComm. We were told to get one for CreComm because teachers do not accept any excuses for lost work. If your computer blows up you are expected to have another copy of your work somewhere else. This somewhere else destination should be a HARD DRIVE. I had been told the perks about hard drives from electronic store specialists but I still found myself reluctant to buy one . Then as we sat down in our buyer beware group the discussion of hard drives began.

Alyssa the most avid hard drive user of the group uses a hard drive continuously to back up television shows (that she downloads), photos from her camera and of course school work. Out of the group she had the most experience with hard drives and in return she had the most experience with hard drive failure. The general consensus within our group was that hard drives are suppose to be our back up plan, but perhaps these machines aren’t as reliable as we were being led to believe. People’s whole lives can be stored away on their hard drive so with whispers of higher than expected failure rates on these machines we began our investigation.

Our research was divided between primary and secondary research. Our primary researched consisted of purchasing a hard drive, interviewing employees at various electronic stores as well as  an IT from Red River College. As well we emailed hard drive manufacturers inquiring information from the companies who actually make the hard drives. The secondary research we complied was through reading online articles and forums about other peoples’ experience with hard drives. The bases we wanted to cover for ourselves and for our public were the following;

1.  best brands
2.  failure rates
3. how to shop smart
4. proper care
5. warning signs
6. how to deal if it crashes

To the fellow CreComm students who read my blog I hope these results help you in purchasing the best hard drive suitable for yourself . And the helpful tips should make your hard drive last as long as the warranty.

Failure Rates
-general life span 3 to 5 years
- Western Digital claim a failure rate of  8 drives per 1000
 
Shopping Smart
-make sure your chosen hard drive is compatible with your Mac or PC
-decide how you will be using your hard drive; portable or stationery
-speed (firewire enabled hard drives are ten times faster)
-warranty (safest option is to buy the brand with the longest warranty)


Proper Care
-be aware of the sensitivity of external hard drives, they’re easily susceptible to physical damage
- do not let your hard drive over heat; purchase one with a fan or turn it off regularly
-external hard drives should be turned off when not in use
-utilize tune up programs to warn you of any dangers
-properly eject your hard drive from your computer

Warning Signs
-freezing
-slow at accessing files and saving and opening
-louder noises coming from your hard drive
-the blue screen of death
-silence;  no hard drive sounds at all

How to Deal with Failure
-talk to professionals
-don’t trust online forums
-geek squad at Best Buy provides a service of retrieving your lost files which costs upwards of $230 (with no guarantee)

WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER:
-you pay for quality; buy the best brands even if they are more expensive
-do not expect your hard drive to last longer than its warranty
-a longer warranty is the way to go
-decide whether your hard drive will be portable or stationery and Mac or PC (or both)
-if you want to get the most out of your hard drive treat it properly

Lastly, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. These machines are not golden, back up your files in more then one place.

 DADDY VS MOMMY

Maybe Judy Wasylycia-Leis should have referred to Sam Katz as DADDY a couple times at the forum on Wednesday October 6th.

On October 3, The Winnipeg Free Press published an article about gender issues in the mayoral election. Shannon Sampert, an assistant professor in the University of Winnipeg's department of politics was quoted saying, "If she loses it will be because she's a woman." Sampert further supported her point by saying, "The problem is women are evaluated differently. Sam Katz's vulnerability is he dates younger women, but a lot of men think, 'Good for him.' But Judy will be seen as a tough feminist."

I am no political buff. But after reading The Winnipeg Free Press on Wednesday and then experiencing the gendered name calling at the political forum, which took place at our Red River Downtown Campus, it made me ponder the gender issues in this election. It disgusts me that Sam Katz, continuously called Judy mother throughout the forum. It was extremely condescending and childish. Judy's digs at Sam were not personal insults; they were commentary on his job as mayor. Her comments could have been used whether she was talking about a male or a female opponent. His comments were merely focused on her gender. In my opinion this shows lack of intelligence on the part of Sam Katz. If he wanted to slam Judy he could have came up with a more intelligent way to do so.

I AM NOT IMPRESSED.

Lil Kim left me. Nicki Minaj saved me.

I remember fondly cruising around in my beige van, Berta all throughout high school. I would take my Bertha baby everywhere with me. We would travel to the park, we would travel to the movies and most importantly we travel across the city to different parties. OBVIOUSLY THERE WOULD ALWAYS BE A DD. I'd never put Bertha in harms way.

To the point... Bertha's favourite music to cruise to was Lil Kim. She was impressed with what Lil Kim could do with a sprite can. With mixed cds galore we would cruise south st.vital in style with the beats pumping.

Then Lil Kim went to prison.

If a person needs to be taught a lesson, Bertha and I aren't opposed to them doing some hard time. But we are opposed to not having new daily inspiration in rap form. So with Lil Kim all locked up,  Bertha and I felt a hole in our hearts.

Then eventually Lil Kim was released.....

Unfortunately after her prison break she was making regular appearances on that show Who Wants to be the Next Pussycat Doll or WHATEVER....... (granted at one point I maybe wanted to be the new pussycat member but I wasn't airing that out for the whole world to know (until now) ) Anyways Lil Kim lost her gangsta appeal so we left her in the dust.

After grade 12 passed, so did Bertha. She left my life. I was now alone; no beige vans to drive me around, no female gangsters to call my friend. 

UNTIL 2010, when Nicki Minaj came across my radar. THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE! Nicki doesn't even have an album released yet but she has collaborated with, Sean Paul, Sean Kingston, Usher, Trey Songz, Lil Wayne and of course her media husband Drake.

ummmmm excuse me, establishing yourself in the bizz like that without even have released a full album yet..... that is nothing but FIERCNESS. 

So now I drive a camry, and well we get our swagger on everyday to Nicki.

In all seriousness, I've started a twitter for my PR class. I'm hoping it becomes pretty useful to send my humor out to the world. It'll help me gain a LITTLE fan following and spread my mania to the world. In the future it will be a great asset for people to understand my persona and see what I am capable of in the communications world.
